The Seoul Expat Global Meetup Group
Seoul Expat global members!
Let's go to the 2016 Mungyeong Traditional Chasabal(Tea Bowls) Festival in Mungyeong and go trekking along Mungyeongsaejae on April 30, 2016(Saturday) .
This festival is the best festival according to the Ministry of Culture, Athletics and Tourism. Chatsabal refers to the tea bowl used in tea ceremonies. Having tea is one of the best ways to achieve self-control. The tea bowl itself represents our inner life.
The theme of the 2016 Mungyeong Traditional Chasabal Festival is "the tradition contained in the tea pottery, the deep echo!"
This is to show the traditional ways and processes of making tea pottery, in which sandy soils of the region of Mungyeong are first dug, filtered and then tea pottery is finally created.
We will be reminded of the legacy of the traditional pottery from Mungyeong based on the traditional foot-potter's wheel and mangdaengi kiln of the region of Mungyeong. Through this festival, we will be appreciate the ancient potters' hard work, sufferings and endeavors.
We, only Expats, are invited to visit the 2016 Mungyeong Traditional Chasabal(Tea Bowls) Festival by the local city.
Mungyeong has a rich history, a convenient traffic system, and abundant firewood. It is the best tea bowl producing place because of high quality sandy soil with wide limestone deposits. The fact that 40 kiln sites use traditional firewood kilns is what earns our festival its proud reputation.
Also this city's cultural infrastructure is formed by the Mungyeong Ceramic Museum, Sagijang Apprenticeship Hall, Docheon Ceramic Art Museum, and more than 200 kiln sites, eliciting deep appreciation for our tradition.
Mungyeongsaejae is highest and toughest hill to hike on the Yeongnamdaero, which connects the Han River and Nakdong River area over Joryeong Mountain on the Bekdudaegan range. It has long been regarded an important region for social, cultural, and economic distribution as well as a strategic military location. Saejae means the hill is so high, even birds find it difficult to overcome. Ancient texts also refer to it as a grassy (eoksae), forested hill, hence Saejae. Also it is situated between Haneuljae and Iwoorijae, thus earning it another name, Saejae (the hill in between), or the new hill.
Mungyeong is a treasury of cultural geography of Korea and a museum of mountain passes. There is Mungyeongsaejae, regarded a major representative of chosun's mountain hill passes, and means of communicating chosun history and culture, Haneuljae, the oldest hill pass, Tokkibiri which is considered the finest of the old passes and the Karakoram Route ('Southern Silk Road') of Korea, and Yugok station which was a travel hub on Yeongnamdero.
These cultural sites of Yetgil (old pass) are visited by many people wanting to experience the aliveness that made it so famous.
Yetgil museum was built to illustrate the historical cultural identity of Mungyeong and opened in 2009. Before remodeling, it was the Mungyeongsaejae Museum and focused on local history. Today Yetgil Museum focuses on various cultural aspects related to the old passes.
