Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4) is coming up fast. And for that we want to go where there is lots of sunshine, water activities with mother nature, massive outdoor barbeque dinner, and beers and more beers. And that is exactly what we intend to do!
We depart Friday night to avoid having to get up 5AM and avoid morning traffic and save time. We go deep into the densely wooded mountains of Gangwondo region for a weekend of water play adventure. Inje is the perfect place to enjoy summer extreme activities in Korea. On Saturday, we will be River Trekking. Sat Evening we party it up at a beautiful pension/cabin with a big outdoor barbecue and a huge ice cooler full of Canadian Beers (Moosehead) and American Beer (Sierra Nevada) and Korean Keg Beer. Then on Sunday, you can have the choice to do rafting or bungee jumping or zipline before heading back home.
People sometimes join the trip for the rafting but afterwards say the river trekking was the best part. River trekking means to follow the river from one end to another. Almost all of the Korean hikers walk on either sides of the river and then walk across the river when the trail ends and starts on the other side of the river. But we like to jump in the pools of water and swim across. And in some parts there are great jump off spots. It is possible not not get wet by walking around the pools and jumping on stepping stones.
This is not some phony river trekking where you walk along the side of a river for a few minutes. This is rugged wilderness trekking kind of experience. It’s very unique in Korea. The entire length is about 6km and will take you 3 to 5 hours depending on your trekking speed and rest times.
(Old sneakers or hiking shoes are the best to take. You will want toe protection so flip flops are not recommended. Also shorts are not recommended because you may scratch your legs but some have done parts of the trekking in bikinis. Waterproof case (Lock and Lock) is recommended for your electronics and money and food. )
At the end of the river trekking we always hit up the small store for ice cold beer we can have while waiting at the river side.
The 7 segment Zipline course is a lot of fun! You start off with shorter zips from platform to platform and also walk across some shaky hanging bridges. And if you thought these were scary (or thrilling) you will be amazed at the giant zip across the river below. You will zip across and then zip back. BUNGEE JUMP OVER RIVER
The bungee jump is a 63 meter jump which they claim is the highest in Korea. You can do it at a special discounted price of 48,000 for ankle and 30,000 for waist. They say the ankle costs so much more because it takes longer to prepare someone to do ankle jump and so limits how many people can do the jump. Due to time limitations we will take deposits for the first 10 people who sign up for it. After that you can pay at the Bungee Jump place depending on if there is space and time.
Inje rafting has arguably the best rapids in Korea. And July is the perfect time to go. The other two rafting areas (Han Tan and Dong Gang) are nice but Inje has the fastest rapids. OK, it’s not Colorado River Rapids nor Tully (or add a name here) but it’s the strongest rapids Korea has to offer. You will have opportunity to jump off the boat and float down. Also we will make a stop at big boulder area to flip jump into the deep water. TENT SLEEPING 1st NIGHT
We depart Seoul at 11PM and avoid having to get up at 5AM and avoid traffic in the morning and save time. We have a special place near a river with grass area and public bathroom facilities and picnic bench tables. We will sleep here and go to the river trekking place in the morning. PENSION/CABIN LODGING 2nd NIGHT
The pension is a beautiful pension with a small grass lawn and picnic tables with views of the river below. It will be a lovely rest away from the fast paced city life or the hectic schedule of a teaching profession. The rooms are generally Korean "ondol" style with one or two beds or no bed. If you want to pay extra for your own room please let us know. These are peak days so lodging prices are high at their peak. But by sharing the bigger rooms we can keep costs relatively low. OUTDOOR BBQ DINNER AND BEERS
This weekend is going to be all about outdoor BBQ and beers. We will have at least 4 charcoal BBQ grills going. It will be a mix of Samgyeobsal and Moksal in the barbie. And with all the fixins Korean style. Also we will have kegs of Kloud Beer for sale at 2,000 for each 14oz cup. And a huge cooler full of ice and Moosehead and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. After dinner we will have campfire to roast some marshmellows and smores!
We will take ingredients so you can make sandwiches for the river trekking on Saturday and rafting on Sunday. Ham and Cheese or Peanut Butter and Jelly. Add 2,000 won for additional sandwiches if you are a big eater. You will have opportunity to buy drinks at a store.
Saturday we will have big breakfast muffins and on Sunday we will make our very popular breakfast burritos. Hot drinks will be also available.
